Turquoise
Turquoise got its name from traders called Turks who brought the stone to Europe
from Persia via Turkey centuries ago. It is mined in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New
Mexico, Arizona and California in the US, it is also found in China and the Middle
East. Only 25% of turquoise is usable or desirable in its natural form. Most untreated
turquoise is a fragile, porous stone with a tendency to undergo changes in color
when exposed to light, perspiration, oils and detergents. Even though it is hard
enough to be a gemstone, it is comparatively soft. The following are various treatments
used to keep it from fading or crumbling: enhanced, stabilized, compressed or fracture-sealed.
Turquoise is the one of the official birth stones for the month of December. Also
known as the "sky stone" legend has it that turquoise attracts money, success and
love. Its powers include protection, healing, courage, friendship, and luck. Relaxes
the mind, and eases mental tension. The coloring of turquoise ranges from royal
blue to green with various variations in between. The most valuable is Lander Blue,
which came from a small deposit that was found in Nevada.
